ERJ Archives: Tariffs hit Firestone
London - The recent US imposition of anti-dumping measures on tires imported from China is not the first time tariffs have been used in the tire industry, ERJ archives show.
Back in 1915, the magazine noted the appearance, in Birmingham, of a new tire known as the 'Firestone', made by the Firestone Tyre and Rubber Co. of Akron, Ohio.
“The tyre has a business-like look, and a peculularity being that the non-skid property is secured by a bold embossing of the 'Non-skid' obliquely across the rim of the tyre,” said the 2 October report,
Despite much public interest, the report concluded that demand for the tire would likely be limited by the imposition of tariffs on foreign tire imports coming into the UK.
