French workers sue Goodyear in Ohio to save jobs
ERJ staff report (LMH)
Akron, Ohio – French workers from Goodyear’s troubled Amiens plant have sued the company in its Ohio hometown in an effort to save their jobs, The Associated Press reports.
The newswire said the lawsuit was filed on 9 April in Summit County Common Pleas Court in Akron against Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. on behalf of workers at its factory in Amiens, France. The suit seeks to block a plant shutdown and win $4 million in damages.
Attorney Robert Gary, who worked on the filing, said the labour dispute was taken to court in Ohio because corporate decisions were made in Akron, AP reported, adding that Goodyear says it hasn't seen the lawsuit.
Goodyear has been trying to restructure and close its plant in northern France for some months in the face of a shrinking European car market. The French workers say Goodyear wants to shift the operations to lower-cost China, AP reported.
