UK drivers in dark about tire care and wheel changing
ERJ staff report (BC)
Swansea, UK – More than half of car drivers have no idea whether their vehicle has a spare wheel, and even more wouldn't feel confident enough to change one if they experienced a puncture, according to a survey by independent garage and tire retailer Halfords Autocentres reported by This is South Wales.
The survey found that 56 per cent of car owners did not know whether their vehicle had a full-size spare tire, 65 per cent felt unable to change a wheel and 73 per cent had not read their car handbook to check vital information such as correct tire pressures.
Rory Carlin from Halfords Autocentres said: "There is a great deal of complacency and a general lack of understanding surrounding tires and their care.
"Most new cars are equipped with a tire sealant kit, these are neither a permanent fix nor a solution to all punctures. They are for emergencies only, to help get you home or to the nearest garage, and no substitute for checking the condition of your tires."
