South African tire recycling on skids
ERJ staff report (BC)
Johannesburg - The South African (SA) government's tire recycling scheme may be stalled after a second high court bid to halt its implementation, reports Paul Vecchiatto of BDlive.
The SA Department of Environmental Affairs withdrew its Recycling Economic Development Initiative of South Africa (Redisa) Integrated Waste Tyre Management Plan published in July after a court challenge from the industry, which had its own plan.
A new version, published last month, has been implemented, but is in turn being challenged by the Retail Motor Industry Organisation's Tyre Dealers Association (TDA).
TDA national director Vishal Premlall said on 20 December that the latest court challenge to the plan was based on his organisation's belief that the latest version of the recycling plan may have been developed within eight days, and there was not enough public consultation over it.
The Department said in a statement on Thursday that everyone registered with Redisa would have to comply with the approved plan with immediate effect.
