Wacker develops tin-free silicone rubber catalyst
ERJ staff report (BC)
Munich - Wacker Chemie A.G. has formulated a tin-free catalyst for two-part, room temperature-curing silicone rubber grades for mouldmaking and encapsulation applications, reports Rubber & Plastics News.
Elastosil Catalyst NEO is a tin-free catalyst for two-part, condensation-curing silicone mouldmaking compounds. Silicone rubber grades of this type are used for making detailed moulds and reproductions of technical items, objects of art and archaeological artefacts.
The catalyst is formulated not only to provide a sufficiently long pot life for making moulds of large objects, but also to ensure that the compounds cure within 24 hours, according to Wacker.
Because condensation-curing compounds harden at room temperature in the presence of humidity, they can be processed without the use of complex equipment, Wacker said.
Their primary application is making moulds of technical items, objects of art and archaeological artefacts - with the silicone rubber forming the negative mould of the item being reproduced. Condensation-curing compounds can also be used for encapsulating electronic components and assemblies.
