Japanese auto production, export down in Sept

Tokyo -- JAMA, the Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association, says auto production in September was down 12.4 percent at 773 990 units. For the first half of the fiscal year 2012 (April - September), production was up by 25.7 percent at 4 906 628 units.
Passenger car production was down 12.5 percent at 662 070 units, with the biggest drop in standard cars over 2000cc (-17.8 percent), though mini car production, under 660cc, was up by 5.5 percent at 120 466 units. For the first half of the fiscal year, car production was up 27.2 percent at 4 230 137 units.
Truck production in September was down 12.8 percent at 101 064 units. Standard truck production was down by 16.9 percent at 46 562 units, while mini trucks, under 660cc were down by 15.4 percent at 30 338 units. For the first half of the fiscal year, truck production was up 14 percent at 617 984 units.
Bus production was down 2.5 percent at 10 856 units, though large bus production grew by 24.7 percent (950 units). For the first half of the fiscal year, bus production was up 20.2 percent at 58 507 units.
Domestic auto sales in September stood at 446 687 units, down 3.4 percent compared to September 2011. Sales were down for both cars (-3.7 percent) and trucks (-1.9 percent), but up by 16.8 percent for buses. For the first half of the fiscal year, domestic auto sales were up 33.5 percent at 2 590 506 vehicles, and sales have increased significantly for cars (36.2 percent), trucks (19.7 percent) and buses (23.3 percent).
Motorcycle production was down in September by 19.1 percent at 46 509 units. For the first half of the fiscal year, production was also down by 16 percent at 264 553 units.
Automobile export in September was down by 19.6 percent at 384 068 units. Passenger cars were down 21.5 percent at 329 886 units, while trucks were down 6.7 percent at 42 729 units, and buses were down 5.1 percent at 11 453 units. The value of auto export was $13 103 million, down by 15.5 percent. In the first half of fiscal 2012, export was up by 19.4 percent at 2 367 260 units. Cars were up 18.9 percent at 2 066 800 units, trucks were up 23.3. percent (238 646 units) and buses up 21.2 percent (61 814 units).
