Tyre sales continue weak into September - Michelin

Paris -- Michelin reports that tyre sales around the world were poor in September, with truck tyre sales hit especially badly.
The company has updated its website with a limited regional breakdown of the growth in the global tyre industry. The site still only gives percentage changes from a year ago and ignores Asia. Data is given for September 2012.
In truck tyre markets, Europe OE demand turned negative, converting August's positive 1 percent growth to a 9 percent decline in September. In the year to date, the market declined by 3 percent. On the replacement side, September 2012 saw a decline of 4 percent compared to the same month a year ago. This is an improvement on the year-to-date decline of -19 percent
In the Americas, North American OE truck tyre markets have ended last year's growth trend -- the year to date has seen an increase of 9 percent, while the most recent month showed a decline of 17 percent. Replacement sales were down by 5 percent in the month of September and down by 3 percent in the year to date. In Brazil, OE sales fell by 29 percent in the month of September and fell by 33 percent in the first nine months while the decline in replacement sales was lower at -1 percent in the year to date, exacerbated by an decline of 4 percent in September.
Michelin did not report sales outside these countries.
Car tyre markets continued to be stronger in the Americas than in Europe. Europe showed a decline of 16 percent in the OE market for the month, taking the total fall in the first nine months to 5 percent. On the replacement side, sales in September declined by 10 percent, contributing to the overall decline of 10 percent in the first nine months.
In the Americas, North American OE markets rose by 4 percent in September, keeping the nine-month growth at 19 percent. Replacement sales fell by 14 percent in September, accelerating the none-month decline to 3 percent. In Brazil, OE sales increased by 27 percent in the most recent month bringing the decline in the year to date to just 1 percent. Replacement sales were up by 6 percent in September and by 2 percent in the first nine months.
Michelin did not report sales outside these countries.
