Tyre sales continue weak into August - Michelin

Paris -- Michelin reports that tyre sales in Europe and the Americas were poor in August, with replacement tyre sales down everywhere except Brazil.
The company has updated its website with a limited regional breakdown of the growth in the global tyre industry. The site still only gives percentage changes from a year ago and ignores Asia. Data is given for August 2012.
In truck tyre markets, Europe OE demand remained positive, with positive growth (1 percent) in August. In the year to date, the market declined by 1 percent. On the replacement side, August 2012 saw a decline of 6 percent compared to the same month a year ago. This is an improvement on the year-to-date decline of -21 percent
In the Americas, North American OE truck tyre markets have ended last year's growth trned -- the year to date has seen an increase of 13.0 percent, while the most recent month showed a decline of 4.0 percent. Replacement sales were down by 6 percent in the month of August and down by 4 percent in the year to date. In Brazil, OE sales fell by 37 percent in the month of August and fell by 33 percent in the first eight months while the decline in replacement sales was lower at -4 percent in the year to date, helped by an increase of 8 percent in August.
Michelin did not report sales outside these countries.
Car tyre markets were slightly stronger in the Americas than in Europe. Europe showed a decline of less than one percent in the OE market for the month, taking the total fall in the first eight months to 3 percent. On the replacement side, sales in August declined by 8 percent, contributing to the overall decline of 10 percent in the first eight months.
In the Americas, North American OE markets rose by 12 percent in August, keeping the eight-month growth at 20 percent. Replacement sales fell by 5 percent in August, easing the 1 percent decline seen in the the first eight months. In Brazil, OE sales increased by 4 percent in the most recent month bringing the decline in the year to date to 5 percent. Replacement sales were up by 7 percent in August and by 2 percent in the first eight months.
Michelin did not report sales outside these countries.
