Europe to monitor tyre labelling legislation

Brussels - A working party on market surveillance and enforcement of the forthcoming European tyre label will meet for the first time on 7 September. The committee is backed by the highest levels within the European Commission and has a duty to share expertise and experience on enforcement of the tyre label legislation.

While the enforcement of the new rules has been on the back burner until June of this year, the passing of the Cars21 agreement in June has brought it to the top of the priority list.

The new group represents relevant authorities in most of the EU countries; more are expected to join in the coming weeks. It is developing detailed, practical and legal tools and systems to ensure that national governments can effectively monitor the label; identify abuses or transgressions and then carry out effective tests and ultimately impose specific penalties and sanctions on offenders.

The establishment of the committee represents a major victory for the tyre industry in its efforts to ensure active enforcement of this new legislation.
