ERJ staff report (R&PN)
Michigan City, Indiana -- Federal-Mogul plans to close its Michigan City wiper blade plant at the end of the fourth quarter.
In a Workers Adjustment and Retraining Notification letter, Plant Manager Mark Dranchak said about 81 hourly employees and 15 salaried employees could be affected by the closing. A Federal-Mogul spokesman said the workers were told of the shutdown on June 27.
Federal-Mogul has been reviewing its entire operations, and ascertained the 27-year-old Michigan City production could be combined with a plant in Juarez, Mexico. The spokesman said the company will see a financial savings from the closure, but he is unsure of the amount.
Employees at the Indiana plant will be considered for relocation within Federal-Mogul. Those not offered jobs will receive termination benefits, the official said.
The Juarez factory has about 400 employees and manufactures wiper blades, arms, and other parts.
