Trelleborg develops aerospace seals resistant to esters
ERJ staff report (DS)
Washington DC - Trelleborg Sealing Solutions has introduced EPDM-based seals which meet stringent aerospace standards in relation to exposure to HyJet and Skydrol-branded hydraulic fluids.
The company said, “In tests this new EPDM compound exhibits good stability at elevated temperatures in all type IV and type V phosphate ester hydraulic fluids, known under the HyJet and Skydrol brands, as specified in NAS1613 Rev 5. “
Materials Development Manager at Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, Jon Cutler, says: “The requirements for seals and gaskets in HyJet and Skydrol applications are extremely demanding. Seals have to withstand high pressures along with wide temperature fluctuations, and we have specifically engineered this new EPDM to be best-in-class in these conditions. Extensive long-term testing has been successfully undertaken with results that are better than other sealing materials on the market.
Compliant with NAS 1613 Rev 5 and independently accredited by LRCCP in France to NFL 17-241B8, EPDM E8T89 has an operating temperature range of -55 °C to +135 °C/ -65 °F to +275 °F. Typical applications are primary and secondary flight controls, thrust reverser actuation systems, braking systems, general hydraulic and actuation systems. The material can be standardised across a number of applications, further lowering costs in reduced inventory management.
