EPDM, silicone and TPE profiles provide insulation, noise reduction and weather protection
Frankfurt, Germany – The German Rubber Industry Association (WDK) has highlighted the role of elastomer sealing profiles in improving the energy efficiency and performance of buildings.
As part of its "Rubber – We Save the World" campaign, the association said permanently elastic seals used in windows, doors and facades help retain heat while providing protection against noise, wind and rain.
"A good window seal must be able to do much more than just close a gap," said Volker Krings, chief chemist at the WDK.
"It must remain elastic for many years, withstand temperature fluctuations and weather influences and return to its original shape after each load," he added.
"This is the only way it can permanently prevent draughts, moisture and noise from entering the building and valuable heating energy from being lost."
According to WDK, sealing profiles must withstand repeated opening and closing of windows and doors while accommodating the different thermal expansion and contraction of materials such as wood, metal and plastics.
The seals are also exposed to UV radiation, ozone, moisture and significant temperature variations.
Materials used for such applications include EPDM rubber, silicone and thermoplastic elastomers (TPE), with the choice depending on the specific application.
WDK highlighted EPDM in particular for its weathering and ageing resistance as well as its resilience.
"Whether it's thermal insulation, noise reduction or protection against wind and rain – permanently elastic seals make an important contribution to energy-efficient buildings and thus comfortable living," Krings said.
"They are among the inconspicuous heroes made of rubber, without which modern construction and living would simply be inconceivable."
