Tyre sales mixed in May - Michelin

Paris -- Michelin reports that tyre sales around the world were mixed, with car tyre sales on the up, but truck tyre sales declining.
The company has updated its website with a limited regional breakdown of the growth in the global tyre industry. The site still only gives percentage changes from a year ago and ignores Asia. Data is given for May 2012.
In truck tyre markets, Europe OE demand declined, with negative growth (-7.9 percent) in May. In the year to date, the market declined by 3.3 percent. On the replacement side, May 2012 saw a decline of 25.8 percent compared to the same month a year ago. This matches the year-to-date decline of -27.1 percent
In the Americas, North American OE truck tyre markets continued to grow, but last year's hectic growth is slowing sharply -- the year to date has seen an increase of 21.0 percent, while growth in the most recent month was 21.5 percent. Replacement sales were down by 82.3 percent in the month of May and down by 6.6 percent in the year to date. In Brazil, OE sales fell by 25.4 percent in the month of May and fell by 26.5 percent in the first four months while the decline in replacement sales was lower at -3.9 percent in the year to date, with a fall of -1.8 percent in May.
Michelin did not report sales outside these countries.
Car tyre markets were slightly less weak outside Europe. Europe showed a decline of -12.2 percent in the OE market for the month, taking the total fall in the first five months to -3.2 percent. On the replacement side, sales in May declined by 6.8 percent, contributing to the overall decline of 11.2 percent in the first five months.
In the Americas, North American OE markets rose by 29.1 percent in May, boosting the five-month growth to 25.7 percent. Replacement sales grew by 7.1 percent in May, easing the 3.1 percent decline seen in the the first five months. In Brazil, OE sales grew by 13.5 percent in the most recent month bringing the decline in the year to date to just 0.7 percent. Replacement sales were up by 1.1 percent in May and by 3.2 percent in the first five months.
