Tyre sales continue weakness into April - Michelin

Paris -- Michelin reports that tyre sales around the world continued to be weak in all markets except North America.
The company has updated its website with a limited regional breakdown of the growth in the global tyre industry. The site still only gives percentage changes from a year ago and ignores Asia. Data is given for April 2012.
In truck tyre markets, Europe OE demand declined, with negative growth (-2.2 percent) April. In the year to date, the market declined by 0.4 percent. On the replacement side, April 2012 saw a decline of 31.3 percent compared to the same month a year ago. This matches the year-to-date decline of -28.5 percent
In the Americas, North American OE truck tyre markets continued to grow, but last year's hectic growth is slowing sharply -- the year to date has seen an increase of 21.7 percent, while growth in the most recent month was 24.5 percent. Replacement sales were down by 8.6 percent in the month of April and 8.4 percent in the year to date. In Brazil, OE sales fell by 11.0 percent in the month of April and by 23.6 percent in the first four months while the decline in replacement sales was lower at 2.9 percent in the year to date, with a fall of 1.8 percent in April.
Michelin did not report sales outside these countries.
Car tyre markets were also weaker. Europe showed a decline of 5.1 percent in the OE market for the month, taking the total increase in the first four months negative at -0.6 percent. On the replacement side, sales in April declined by 17.5 percent, contributing to the overall decline of 12.1 percent in the first four months.
In the Americas, North American OE markets rose by 37.7 percent in April, boosting the four-month growth to 25.7 percent. Replacement sales fell by 2.2 percent in April, easing the 5.5 percent decline seen in the the first four months. In Brazil, OE sales fell by 8.5 percent in the most recent month bringing the decline in the year to date to 4.7 percent. Replacement sales were up by 2.5 percent in April and by 4.2 percent in the first four months.
