EU truck tyre sales weakened in February - Michelin

Paris -- Michelin reports that replacement sales of truck tyres continued to decline in February. Other markets showed varying fortunes.
The company has updated its website with a limited regional breakdown of the growth in the global tyre industry. The site still only gives percentage changes from a year ago and ignores Asia. Data is given for February 2012.
In truck tyre markets, Europe's growth in the OE market continues to slow, with growth in February of 1.4 percent and in the year to date of 1.8 percent. On the replacement side, the second month of 2012 saw a decline of 24.7 percent compared to the same month a year ago, and dropped by 21.8 percent in the year to date.
In the Americas, North American OE truck tyre markets continued to grow, but at a slightly slower rate than the hectic growth seen last year -- the year to date has seen an increase of 33.6 percent, and in February of 32.9 percent. Replacement sales were down by 15.4 percent in the month of February, and down by 12 percent in the year to date. In Brazil, OE sales fell by 36.7 percent in the month of February while the decline in replacement sales was 7.5 percent.
Michelin did not report sales outside these countries.
Car tyre markets were also weaker. However, Europe showed an increase of 2.6 percent in the OE market for the month, but was down 8.1 percent in the first two months of the year. On the replacement side, growth in February declined by 8.1 percent, and in the year to date by 9 percent.
In the Americas, North American OE markets rose by 20.8 percent in February, and by 19.6 percent in the year to date, while replacement sales fell by 0.4 percent in the second month of the year, and 6.4 percent in the year to date. In Brazil, OE sales fell by 0.3 percent in the most recent month, and by 2.2 percent in the year to date. Replacement sales were up by 1.1 percent in February, and by 2.2 percent for the first two months of the year.
Michelin did not report sales outside these countries.
