Excessive lead found in groundwater at Tokai unit

Matsusaka, Japan -- Tokai Rubber Industries said it has commenced an investigation into groundwater at its Matsuzaka Plant after a preliminary investigation found lead levels in ground water far exceeded environmental limits.

National safety limits permit lead in ground water up to 0.01 mg per litre. A concentration of up to 0.23 mg/litre was found in one location at the plant and levels of 0.03 and 0.011 were found in two other locations.

Matsusaka is located near the Japanese south coast between Nagoya and Osaka. It was not significantly affected by the 11 March earthquake.
