US hospital bans latex balloons

Florida, US -- Lakeland Regional Medical Center in Florida has banned latex balloons because of their potential to trigger allergic reactions in patients and staff.
The group said in a 22 February statement,, "Latex is a common allergy and sensitivity among many who enter the hospital; and the substance can cause severe reactions."
The statement continued, "our mission is to improve lives by delivering exceptional health care. The elimination of latex balloons from LRMC's campus is another way we are doing so."
