Rubber-based synthetic turf helps conserve environment in US
ERJ staff report (LMH)
Atlanta, Georgia - Synthetic turf installed in North America has a positive effect on the environment, according to the US-based Synthetic Turf Council (STC).
With over 105 million tyres recycled to produce the artificial grass, it conserves more than three billion gallons of water, eliminates nearly a billion pounds of pesticides and fertilisers, the STC say.
Most of the synthetic turf sports fields and landscape applications in the US user crumb rubber infill, recycled from used tyres.
According to the STC, each full-sized synthetic turf field in the US saves between 500 000 to 1 000 000 gallons of water each year, and there are currently more than 6000 turf fields being used in the country. It also eliminates the need to water lawns for residential properties.
Founded in 2003, the Synthetic Turf Council was set up to promote the industry and to assist buyers and end users with their product.
