Michelin releases sales figures for June
ERJ staff report (DS)
Paris - Michelin has updated its website with tyre market data for the month of June. The new data shows that June was, with a few exceptions, a poor month for tyre sales.
Michelin said the total European OE market for car tyres in the six months to June 2008 was up by 2.2 percent, while the year-on-year figure for June fell by 2.3 percent. The site gives only percentage changes, not absolute numbers. The North American market continued its downtrend, with the equivalent figures showing a decline of 12.2 percent for the six-month period and a year-on-year decrease in June of 14.9 percent.
In the replacement business, the decline in Europe accelerated in June, with the six-month figures showing a fall of 3.0 percent and the one-month figure down by 8.3 percent. In North America, the replacement market fell by 1.7 percent in the first six months, while the decline reversed temporarily into June, with a 1.1 percent rise.
Chinese replacement sales continued to grow, with the increase in the year to date running at 19.2 percent.
In radial truck OE sales, Europe's growth continued their recovery, with a 14.0 percent increase in the first six months, boosted by an 10.8 percent increase in June. The appalling decline in North American truck OE sales June appears to be slowing, with sales in the first six months down by 18.4 percent, although June showed a decline of just 10.9 percent.
The Brazilian market continued to boom with sales up by 21.7 percent in the year to date matched by a 21.4 percent growth in the month of June. Japan's OE truck sales also grew by 16.7 percent in the month of June, compared to June 2007.
Truck replacement tyres showed a similar tendency. European truck tyre markets fell by 6.0 percent in the first six months, and by 12.4 percent in June. North America fell by 4.7 percent in the year to June, reflecting a decline of 8.1 percent in the year-on-year figure. In Brazil, a year-on-year growth of 9.1 percent helped the six-month figure grow to 21.7 percent.
