Qingdao Mesnac is first to fit RFID in commercial truck tyres

Qingdao, China -- Qingdao Mesnac Co., Ltd. (“Mesnac”) has become the world's first tyre manufacturer to commit to embedding RFID tags in a commercial truck tyre line. The supplier of the tags, Advanced ID Corp., said Mesnac has agreed to purchase a minimum of 2 million RFID tyre tags and a quantity of RFID readers from Advanced ID.

The tags are based on Michelin's 915 MHz tyre tag for the transportation industry, through a licensing agreement.

Advanced ID said it previously sold 100 000 RFID tags to Mesnac which were used for testing purposes. Advanced ID said, "Mesnac intends to lobby for widespread adoption of RFID technology for use in all tyres driven in or made in China."

Mesnac is best known as a privately-held technology supplier to the tyre industry, but Advanced ID said it also has, "significant tyre manufacturing operations."

Mesnac operates a tyre manufacturing division under the name of SaiLun Co., Ltd. Sailun was established in 2002 with funding from the Chinese Government Administration of College and Universities and further investment from several local industrial enterprises. Advanced ID said, "Located on 400 000 m² within the National Economic and Technological Development Zone in Qingdao, SaiLun is credited as the first tyre manufacturer to integrate production, research and demonstration techniques while developing new products to meet the needs of the modern day transportation industry."

Dan Finch, President and CEO of Advanced ID said, “Mesnac, one of the fastest growing and most technologically advanced members of the Chinese tyre market, is the first commercial truck tyre company in Asia to adopt our RFID tags for use in one of their tyre production lines. With many of the world's largest tyre manufacturers working with Advanced ID, we believe Mesnac's first-mover status will serve as a catalyst for broader adoption of our tyre tags.

Advanced ID and Mesnac/SaiLun jointly demonstrated “Tags in Tires” at the fifth annual China International Rubber & Tyre Industry Exhibition (RTF2008) in Qingdao of the People's Republic of China, from April 1-3, 2008. Tires with Advanced ID's RFID tyre tags embedded in them were on display, and Advanced ID representatives joined Mesnac/SaiLun in exhibition and demonstration activities.
