Columbian to add yet more carbon black capacity in Weifang
Marietta, Georgia - Columbian Chemicals Co. is to increase annual capacity for carbon black in Weifang, Shandong Province in China to 70 kt. In January 2007, Columbian said it would expand the existing 20 ktpa facility to 60 ktpa. In the new announcement, Columbian said the increased production capacity will be accomplished with the addition of one carcass line and debottlenecking of the existing tread line.
The construction in Weifang is expected to be completed in August 2008. Currently, the company is engaged in preliminary engineering work and acquiring long-delivery equipment.
Simultaneously, the company announced that its carbon black factory in Trecate, Italy will add a 15 MW co-generation facility which will, "significantly increase the competitiveness of the plant." Upon completion, the plant will generate more power than the site consumes, and the remaining power will be sold to the local utility network. Construction of the cogeneration facility is expected to be completed in early 2009.
