Technology focus: 'World first' silicone rubber flood-protection
ERJ spotlights new developments in elastomer/rubber design, materials, manufacture
Tokyo-based Shin-Etsu Chemical Industry Co. Ltd has launched what it describes as "the industry's first flood-prevention" based on silicone rubber material.
In recent years, the increase in heavy rain and torrential downpours has led to frequent flooding damage to buildings, the company set out in a 7 Oct company release.
Generally, it said, sandbags and water-stop boards are used to prevent flooding in buildings, but water can sometimes enter through gaps in the installation site.
In response, Shin-Etsu has developed an adhesive silicone rubber sheet, which enables both enhanced flood prevention and ease-of-installation.
"The elasticity and adhesion of silicone rubber provide excellent water infiltration prevention, is reusable and does not deteriorate building materials," it stated.
The silicone sheet can be readily attached to the gap at the bottom of the door or shutter or to the gap of an installed waterproof plate.
The development is part of Shin-Etsu's 'silicones solution-engineering' initiative to solve solve customer challenges and contribute to a sustainable society.
