Axens selected for US tire pyrolysis oil upgrading project

Paris – Axens has been selected to provide process design for an unnamed US project to upgrade tire pyrolysis oil (TPO) into low-sulphur fuel.

The French process technology company said 25 Sept that the US investor and project developer had selected it to provide a process design package for a hydroprocessing unit capable of processing 100% TPO.

The project will combine an end-of-life tire pyrolysis facility with a TPO upgrading unit, producing fuel for the local market with a maximum sulphur content of 500ppm.

The project is currently in the front-end engineering design (FEED) phase, with a final investment decision expected in 2027.

Axens said its technology was selected due in part to the ability to address the “specific challenges of tire pyrolysis oil processing and impurity management.”

The process design has been tailored to the project's product-quality requirements and site conditions, using Axens' hydroprocessing technology and catalyst portfolio.
