Veolia signs zero-carbon project for Lianyou carbon black plant

Guangzhou, China – Veolia has signed an agreement with Guangzhou Science City Group and Guangzhou Lianyou Energy to develop a zero-carbon industrial flue gas capture and resource utilisation project at Lianyou’s phase III carbon black plant in Guangzhou.

The project will capture high-temperature flue gas generated during carbon black production and recover its waste heat to produce steam and electricity for use by companies in the industrial park.

The facility is being developed as a supporting project for Lianyou’s planned 100ktpa petroleum-based carbon black production line, said Veolia in a 4 Sept statement.

Construction is scheduled to begin in October, with trial operations expected in June 2027.

The project, according to Veolia, is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by about 200 kilotonnes per annum while reducing electricity costs for Lianyou’s Phase III project by 10-30%.

The environmental services company said the project would support the transformation of energy-intensive industries through the combination of waste heat recovery, low-carbon energy supply and resource utilisation.

Veolia Asia Pacific chairman Gavin Graveson said the company would continue to increase investment in Guangzhou in areas including “circular economy, clean energy, and industrial decarbonisation.”
