Enters exclusive talks with engineering group Axens to commercialise renewable 5-HMF technology
Clermont-Ferrand, France – Michelin has entered exclusive discussions with French engineering group Axens to accelerate the industrial deployment of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF).
Developed by Michelin's ResiCare business and IFP Energies Nouvelles (IFPEN), 5-HMF is a bio-based molecule produced from renewable feedstocks which can be used as an alternative to certain petroleum-derived chemicals.
Under the proposed partnership, Axens would contribute its licensing, engineering and industrial deployment capabilities to commercialise the technology globally, said Michelin 8 July.
Michelin is currently building a €60-million production unit, with capacity of around 3 kilotonne per annum (ktpa) at Peage-de-Roussillon, France, with operation set to start in early 2027. (ERJ report)
Produced from fructose via 'green' chemical processes, 5-HMF can replace fossil-based substances in a range of applications, including composite materials for high-growth markets.
It can can be used to manufacture resins, adhesives, polymers and speciality chemicals, including polyethylene furanoate (PEF), a bio-based plastic regarded as a potential substitute for PET in packaging, bottles and textile fibres.
ResiCare has previously incorporated the molecule into adhesive resins for non-tire applications, including plywood and abrasives.
While the bio-ingredient is not yet used in Michelin’s tires, the group has previously said it is exploring its potential in tire-cord adhesive applications.
Michelin ResiCare CEO Laurent Lemonnier said the company believes 5-HMF "is set to become a reference platform molecule for sustainable chemistry."
"Our planned partnership with Axens is a decisive lever to accelerate its global deployment and meet growing demand for high-performing bio-based solutions," he added.
