ISCC+ certification initiative to improve traceability, support use of recycled steel in tire supply chains
Milan – Pirelli has participated in an ISCC+ pilot project aimed at introducing recycled steel into the certification scheme's materials list, working with Chinese reinforcement materials supplier Xingda.
In a 5 June statement, the Italian tire maker said it supported the project by helping to define “technical requirements and sustainability guidelines” and by working with Xingda and upstream suppliers through the ISCC+ certification process.
According to Pirelli, the initiative represents a step toward adapting recycled steel supply chains for tire applications to circular economy principles, based on independently verified certification standards.
ISCC, said Pirelli, has described the tire maker as “a pioneering tire manufacturer in having promoted and taken part in this pilot project, and among the first tire makers to introduce ISCC+ certified recycled steel into tire production.”
The certified recycled steel will be used in tires produced at Pirelli plants worldwide through a “controlled blending chain-of-custody approach” designed to provide traceability of raw materials.
The initiative forms part of Pirelli's broader circularity strategy, which includes increasing the use of recycled and bio-based raw materials across its product portfolio.
The company said its long-term target is to market a tire containing more than 80% bio-based and recycled materials by 2030, while achieving a 40% share of such materials across its overall raw material consumption.
