ERJ spotlights leading-edge elastomer/rubber design, materials and manufacturing technologies
Zorge Rubber Solutions has now supplied almost one million of its rubber-PTFE composite components for Li-ion batteries to a tier 1 supplier of a leading German car manufacturer, the company has reported.
The innovative elastomer-membrane system plays a crucial role in the safety and efficiency of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles, Kirchheim unter Teck, Germany-based company stated in a recent press release
According to Zorge, the elastomer membrane composite part was specially developed to meet two important functions in the Li-ion batteries of electric vehicles: Efficient pressure equalisation; and Protection from bursts that could lead to thermal runaway and explosive reactions.
The unit employs a semi-permeable PTFE film that prevents ingress of harmful moisture and offers high resistance to extreme temperature fluctuations and mechanical stress.
The rubber-PTFE composite parts are manufactured using a specially developed vulcanisation mould, continued the Zorge release.
“The injection moulding process bonds PTFE films with specific air permeability rates into a firmly bonded composite,” the company explained.
