Trinseo has launched a water-based functional styrene-butadiene (SBR) anode binder that supports fast-charging performance in lithium-ion batteries.
Formulated for graphite- and silicon-based anode systems, Voltabond 211 is said to target the binder-controlled variables that directly influence electrochemical performance.
By minimising binder migration during electrode drying, the binder achieves a homogeneous distribution across the electrode coating, said a Trinseo release issued 13 May.
This, it said, "improves adhesion to the current collector, providing mechanical cohesion through the mid and top layers, and keeping the electrode surface clear of binder accumulation."
The result is "unimpeded" lithium transfer pathways that help improve cell kinetics and fast-charging capability, according to the polymer company.
Compared to a processor product, the new SBR binder is said to reduce electrode surface resistivity by 5%?and ‘internal resistance’ of the whole battery by up to 18%.
The performance gains are achieved without and impact on peel adhesion or high-temperature performance, the company further pointed put.
