German supplier notes lower manufacturing footprint versus rubber alternatives
Shanghai, China — BASF is presenting a new thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) outsole material range for footwear at Chinaplas 2026, held in Shanghai 21-24 April.
The Elastollan GripTec series includes three grades to support diverse performance and design needs across multiple footwear categories, said BASF 26 March.
The materials are designed for use in sports, lifestyle and children’s footwear, with the group highlighting grip, durability and design flexibility as key characteristics.
Featuring abrasion resistance, transparency and “rubber-like” properties, the materials can support more detailed outsole designs and a range of visual finishes, according to BASF.
In terms of processing, the materials are developed for “efficient manufacturing,” with potential to reduce energy use and waste emissions.
A life cycle assessment cited by BASF found a “41% lower product carbon footprint” during the manufacturing stage compared with conventional rubber outsoles.
“Footwear brands are always looking for materials that enhance user experience and improve safety,” said Rohit Roop Ghosh of BASF.
Early feedback from footwear manufacturers, said Roop Ghosh, has been “positive.”
