Project to develop standards for tire bead wire and EU-bound exports
Beijing – Bekaert has launched a national carbon-emissions standardisation pilot project in China focused on the carbon footprint of steel wire products.
The project was launched at Bekaert’s Asia R&D centre in Wuxi in February and aims to develop “standardised calculation solutions” for products that will be exported the EU, including tire bead wires, said the local ‘high-tech zone’ in Jiangyin in a social media post.
According to post, the project will run through to 2027 and will cover the “entire process from raw materials to finished products,” including the development of carbon footprint standards, data systems and supply-chain coordination mechanisms.
The aim is to establish “enterprise-level carbon footprint management standards” and promote these to national or industry level, it said. In particular, the process will aim to address requirements linked to the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) in Europe.
The pilot will be implemented in phases over two years and will cover four core areas: “standard construction, system implementation, data integration and trade response.”
As part of the project, Bekaert will set up a dedicated taskforce to strengthen “resource investment and technical support,” while working with upstream and downstream partners to enable “carbon data collaboration” and drive the “green transformation of the entire industry chain.”
