System provides wheel detachment prediction to help prevent wheel-separation incidents
Kobe, Japan - Sumitomo Rubber Industries’ proprietary software technology ‘sensing core’ has been adopted for the first time by a Japanese vehicle manufacturer and will be standard equipment on Isuzu Motors’ new Giga heavy-duty truck, which went on sale 29 Oct.
The model includes sensing core’s wheel detachment prediction detection system, designed to identify signs of wheel-nut loosening while the vehicle is in motion.
‘Sensing core’ analyses wheel-speed data from tire rotation together with CAN data from the vehicle control system.
The software can detect tire pressure, tire wear, tire load and potential wheel detachment.
In the Giga, the system issues a warning message and buzzer alert if abnormal wheel-nut loosening is detected, supplementing routine inspections and helping prevent wheel separation accidents.
The adoption of the technology enhances vehicle safety, according to Takeshi Asakura, executive officer and general manager of the automotive system division.
SRI, he said, will continue to expand the technology’s use to more models.
The wheel detachment prediction detection system builds on experience from SRI’s other technologies such as ‘deflation warning system,’ and forms part of the broader development of ‘sensing core’ for next-generation mobility applications.
