Latest report shows 26% cut in CO2 intensity among members, 121% increase in renewable energy use
Geneva, Switzerland – The Tire Industry Project (TIP), a voluntary CEO-led initiative representing 10 major tire manufacturers, has reported measurable progress in key sustainability indicators between 2021 and 2024.
In its latest KPI report titled “Sustainability driven: TIP’s progress towards SDGs,” TIP said its member companies achieved a 26% reduction in CO2 intensity over the three-year period, to hit "the lowest level since 2009."
Furthermore, the companies reported a 121% increase in renewable electricity use and a 14% reduction in total water withdrawals.
Progress was also seen in responsible sourcing, said TIP in a 23 Oct press release.
By the end of 2024, 80% of TIP members had set 'time-bound sourcing targets', which the group said is ‘more than double’ the number in 2021.
Of these, 70% had embedded these targets into supplier contracts, while 30% had completed third-party audits.
In addition, all members remained active in the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR), continuing annual reporting under its mandatory framework.
Between 2021 and 2024, TIP-sponsored studies on tire and road wear particles increased by 75%, with scientific citations up 175%.
The TIP report also highlighted work on circularity, including development of an "end-of-life tire management hierarchy."
The initiative will help guide governments and value-chain partners towards more sustainable tire recovery systems, said TIP.
According to TIP executive director Larisa Kryachkova, the 'data-driven' report shows how members are "turning commitments into measurable results, [and] driving change across the value chain.”
