Toyoda Gosei high-pressure hydrogen tank used on large trucks
Group contributes polymer expertise and moulding technology in development of tanks
Kiyosu, Japan – Japan’s Hino Motors has tapped Toyoda Gosei (TG) for high-pressure hydrogen tanks used on its large fuel cell trucks launched in October.
The Japanese parts maker initially developed the hydrogen tanks for passenger cars in 2020 in collaborating with Toyota Motor Corp. for the Toyota Mirai fuel cell vehicle.
TG contributed “expertise in polymers, such as moulding technology for plastics and rubber” to develop the tanks that “efficiently store” hydrogen under high pressure (700 atm).
In 2023, the manufacturer launched a large high-pressure hydrogen tank, which has so far been used on small trucks and boats.
According to TG, six tanks are used on each of the Hino Motors’ trucks, with each tank capable of holding nine times as much hydrogen as a passenger vehicle.
The Japanese group went on to note that hydrogen is finding a ‘promising’ future in everyday life, in addition to general mobility.
TG said it will contribute to achieving “a hydrogen society” by providing tanks that meet hydrogen loading needs and improve efficiency in hydrogen storage.
