Process enables recycling of crosslinked HCR waste and reintroduction into new formulations
Lyon, France – Elkem ASA has announced a “breakthrough” in silicone rubber circularity with the validation of a proof of concept for a new mechanical recycling process for high consistency rubbers (HCR).
The process enables the recycling of crosslinked HCR waste and the reintroduction of the recycled material into new formulations, said Elkem in a 16 Sept statement.
According to Elkem, the recycled materials have been reincorporated in new formulations at rates of more than 50% while maintaining “excellent” mechanical properties.
The development extends Elkem’s silicone recycling strategy, which now covers both chemical and mechanical recycling.
By combining different routes, Elkem said it can adapt solutions to waste types, carbon goals and product performance.
The work is part of the RENOV project (recycling & reincorporation of elastomer materials), launched in 2023 with support from the French environment agency ADEME.
Partners include Hutchinson, Nexans, and CNRS-affiliated laboratories IMP, CP2M and ISA, as well as Axel’One.
The aim is to develop recycling technologies for crosslinked elastomer waste, optimise reintegration into virgin formulations, and assess market acceptance for mechanically recycled HCR.
Elkem will present samples of the recycled materials and outline the technology at K 2025 plastics and rubber trade fair in Dusseldorf, Germany 8–15 Oct.
High consistency rubbers, also known as heat cured rubbers or high temperature vulcanising silicone rubbers, are used in automotive, aerospace, medical, electronics and consumer goods applications.
According to Elkem, the elastoemrs are noted for mechanical strength, stability, electrical insulation, and thermal resistance from -120°C to more than 300°C depending on grade.
