MATERIALS
Natural rubber
Natural rubber (NR) futures ended the first trading week of September lifted by renewed speculative and hedge fund buying, Japan Exchange Group (JPX) reported 8 Sept. “Bullish momentum returned to the market” with buying activity in the SHFE and INE spilling over to the OSE and SICOM markets, it noted. Sentiment was further supported by a summit in Tianjin, where China gained political backing from over 20 world leaders, and expectations of an interest rate cut in the US.

RESTRUCTURING, M&A
US rheology testing instrumentation specialist Alpha Technologies recently acquired France-headquartered Metravib Material Testing. Based in Limonest, near Lyon, Metravib specialises in dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and fatigue testing.
MARKETS
New EU car registrations grew 7.4% year-on-year in July to 914.7k units, while overall year-to-date figures remained weak, ACEA reported 28 Aug. For the seven-month period to end of July, new EU car registrations fell 0.7% year-on-year to 6.49m units. The battery-electric car market share reached 15.6%, up from 12.5% a year ago. Hybrid-electric models captured a 34.7% share of the market. The combined market share of petrol and diesel cars fell to 37.7%, from 47.9% over the same period in 2024.
