European Parliament vote strengthens “coherence, shielding operators from unnecessary regulatory overlap...”
Brussels – The European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA) has welcomed a European Parliament (EP) vote on the End-of-Life Vehicle Regulation (ELVR), saying it provides a “balanced and workable” basis for final law.
In a plenary vote on 9 Sept, MEPs backed new rules covering vehicle design, reuse and recycling, including minimum recycled-content targets for plastics.
The ELVR text is intended to strike “a fair balance between ambition and feasibility”: setting phased targets on design, reuse and recycling and clarifying roles for producers, dismantlers and recyclers.
Of particular importance for tire makers is that the ELVR avoids duplicating rules that are already covered under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), the sector assocation noted.
Commenting on the EP vote, ETRMA secretary general Adam McCarthy said the decision strengthened “regulatory coherence, shielding operators from unnecessary regulatory overlap.”
“We anticipate that the forthcoming trilogue discussions will preserve this sensible trajectory,” addrd McCarthy.
ETRMA, he concluded, will continue its work to deliver the circularity ambitions of the European tire industry under the ESPR.
