ETRMA in joint industry call urging clarity on next steps in introduction of deforestation regulation
Brussels – The European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA) has co-signed a joint letter calling on the European Commission (EC) to urgently clarify the next steps for implementing the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
Along with EU industry associations from the food, feed, forestry, chemicals, publishing, and manufacturing sectors, ETRMA said speculation around potential amendments, delays, or simplification of the Regulation was “hampering legal certainty and planning.”
Without clear direction, stated the letter, “there is a risk of serious disruptions to supply chains essential to European industry, including tires, automotive parts, construction materials” and many more products.
As many businesses have already made significant investments to align with EUDR requirements, the industry bodies urged the EC and EU Member States to “clearly and publicly” communicate the expected timeline for EUDR implementation;
They also called for a “workable, practical guidance to support implementation efforts in a legally sound and commercially viable way."
Furthermore, the EC was urged to ensure consistent interpretation across all Member States, with "centralised communication from the Commission to avoid fragmentation.”
ETRMA emphasised its commitment to engaging with EU institutions and partners to ensure the tire sector’s compliance with EUDR, while safeguarding resilience and competitiveness.
