EU new-car demand dips further in June as BEV market share remains weak
Car registrations fall 2% for the first half of year, according to latest data by ACEA
Brussels – New-car registrations fell 7.3% year-on-year in the month of June to just over 1 million units, latest data by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) reveal.
For the first half of the year, demand fell to 5.57 million unit, down 1.9% compared to the same period last year, ACEA reported 24 July.
The strong 7.3% decline for June was “indicative of the challenging global economic environment for auto makers,” said the Brussels-based association.
The battery-electric car market share for the first half 2025 stood at 15.6%, up from a low baseline of 12.5% in 2024 but “still far from where it needs to be at this point in the transition.”
Hybrid-electric models continued to grow in popularity, retaining their place as the most popular power type amongst buyers with a 34.8% market share.
Meanwhile, the combined market share of petrol and diesel cars fell to 37.8%, down from 48.2% over the same period in 2024.
