German group says data reflects real material consumption rates, not chemical formulations
Munich, Germany – Wacker Chemie AG has made product carbon footprint (PCF) data available for its entire product range to support customers’ sustainability efforts.
The German group has employed a software system developed by AllocNow which calculates the carbon footprint of each product using detailed “cradle-to-gate” production and emission data.
Unlike some methods that rely on chemical formulations for PCF, the Wacker system provides ‘high-quality data’ based on real material consumption rates, explained a group statement 23 May.
The company added that its calculations are in line with its 'together for sustainability' (TfS) standard published in 2022, which stipulates a uniform procedure for calculating the PCF values of chemical products.
Wacker said it has been collecting product-level emissions data since 2010, combining information on raw materials, energy use, steam, emissions, and process inputs.
The footprint covers all greenhouse gases emitted during production up to the point the product leaves the plant, using CO2 as the baseline for measurement.
The company aims to reduce its direct and energy-related greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 compared with 2020 levels, with a target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2045.
