But BEV market share grows to more than 15% of overall market
Brussels – New EU car registrations fell 1.9% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2025 to 2,768,982 units, according to the latest data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA).
The month of March also saw the market shrink slightly, 0.2%, compared to the year before with just over 1 million units sold, said the association 24 April.
The battery-electric vehicle (BEV) segment increased its market share from 12% in the first quarter of 2024 to 15.2% in the first three months of 2025.
This, however, remains “far from where it was expected to be,” said ACEA.
Hybrid-electric models continued to grow in popularity, retaining their place as the most popular power type amongst buyers and capturing 35.5% of the market.
Meanwhile, the combined market share of petrol and diesel cars fell to 38.3%, down from 48.3% over the same period in 2024.
