Perth, Western Australia – Three tire recycling projects have received funding from the Australian federal government and the labour government of Western Australian as part of a major investment in waste recovery.
In total, the initiative will invest AUS$44 (€26 million) in nine projects which will involve new and upgraded facilities to sort, process and recycle used plastics, tires, paper and cardboard, the Australian state announced 3 Sept.
Specifically, the tire recycling projects include the East-West Pilbara Rubber Recycling, which has received AUS$675,000 worth of land allocation to establish a dedicated off-the-road (OTR) tire recycling and devulcanisation facility.
To be based in Port Hedland, the unit will be capable of processing 12,000 tonnes of end-of-life tires (ELTs) each year.
Matters Enterprises also received AUS$5 million to establish a new off-road ELT collection, sorting and grading facility in Newman in the Pilbara.
It will also purchase, install and commission OTR tire recycling and rubber recycling technology at an existing facility in Rockingham, operated by RubberGem.
The third project involves ‘Complete Tyre Solutions Tyre Recycling’, which has received AUS$4.5 million to expand tire rubber crumb recycling at its Neerabup facility.
The project will have the capacity to recover up to 3,624 tonnes each year of ELTs, including tires used on mining haul trucks.
“Western Australia is making strong progress towards a sustainable future including through recycling,” said Western Australian minister for energy, environment and climate action Reece Whitby.
According to Whitby, Western Australia generates “almost half” of the nation’s off-the-road mining tire waste.
The government support, she said, will assist the mining industry to improve the recovery and recycling of such tires.
