Among other products, energy giant produces 155ktpa of butadiene at Bukom chemical park
Singapore – Shell is carrying out a “strategic review” of its chemicals production assets in Singapore, located on the two islands of Pulau Bukom and Jurong.
In an investors’ update 14 June, the energy & petrochemicals major said the move was part of a wider strategy to “create more value with less emissions.”
According to Shell, the Pulau Bukom site features an ethylene cracker complex with a processing capacity of up to a million tonnes per annum.
Operations at the Singapore site include a butadiene extraction unit with capacity to produce 155 kilotonnes per annum (ktpa).
Shell is also currently building its first “pyrolysis oil upgrader unit” at Bukom, slated for start-up later this year.
With the planned capacity of 50ktpa, the unit processes pyrolysis oil, made from waste plastics into feedstock for the ethylene cracker complex.
According to Shell, the pyrolysis oil is used to produce circular chemicals for use in a wide range of products, including tires.
