US groups call tyre aging bill requirements 'premature'
From Rubber & Plastics News/
Washington-Requiring tyre manufacturers and retailers to provide point-of-sale information on a tyre's manufacture date is “premature†until tyre aging studies are performed, the Tire Industry Association and the Specialty Equipment Market Association have told US senator Mike DeWine.
DeWine is sponsoring a bill requiring both, but TIA and SEMA, in a letter to the senator, insisted the studies must come first.
“Without context, consumers may misinterpret the (tyre aging) information and refuse to buy perfectly good tyres or discard used tyres before it is necessary,†the letter stated.
DeWine hopes to add his tyre aging bill to omnibus highway legislation, which could reach a vote in the Senate as early as 2 Feb.
