DuPont launches new high-performance material for rubber applications
Kingston, Canada - ~DuPont has announced that it is starting production of a high-performance material made of Kevlar pulp and elastomer at its research and development centre in Kingston, Ontario.
The company hoped the strength of its Kevlar fibre - used in bullet-resistant protective apparel - would provide quality improvements in car, motorcycle and bicycle tyres, hoses, belts, seals and gaskets, rubber-covered rolls, pump liners, diaphragms and moulded goods.
''This new composite relies on the same molecular science found in DuPont Kevlar high-performance material that is recognised around the world for its unique strength, durability and light weight,'' DuPont vice-president of technology Dr Roger Siemionko said in a statement.
The company claimed its Kevlar - an organic fibre in the aramid family - was five times stronger than steel and that the material was resistant to thermal hazards up to 800 degrees Fahrenheit.
