Michelin releases August tyre industry data
Paris - Michelin has updated its website with market data for the month of August.
The new data shows that, August was a good month for tyre sales in both car and truck markets everywhere except North America.
Michelin said the total OE market for car tyres in the eight months to August 2007 were up by 4.3 percent in Europe, while the year-on-year figure for August alone was up by 11.2 percent. The site gives only percentage changes, not absolute numbers. For North America, the equivalent figures were a decline of 2.6 percent for the eight-month period and a year-on-year decline in August of 3 percent.
In the replacement business, Europe was slightly less strong, with the eight-month figures showing an increase of 1.2 percent and the one-month figures down marginally by 0.1 percent. In North America, the market increased by 2.1 percent in the first eight months reflecting a lacklustre increase of 1.7 percent in the month of August.
The truck sector is more patchy with Europe and South America showing healthy growth, while Japan is stagnating and North America falls sharply.
In Truck OE sales, Europe showed a 15 percent increase in the first seven months, helped by a 20 percent increase in August. The decline in North American truck OE sales continues to accelerate, with sales in the first eight months down by 27.5 percent, made worse by a 37.3 percent decline in August alone. In Brazil, however, the first eight months showed a healthy 31 percent gain, matched by a 32 percent increase in August.
Truck replacement tyres showed a similar, though less extreme tendency. European truck tyre markets were up 5.3 percent in the first eight months, but just 2.4 percent in August. North America showed a decline of 4.4 percent in the year to July with a small decline of 0.2 percent in the single month. The Brazil market however, grew by 12.4 percent in the first seven months slowed somewhat by a relatively poor 3 percent increase August.
