Condom factory begins operations in Botswana
Gaborone, Botswana -Â Latex Medical Products is to begin manufacturing condoms in Botswana in the next few weeks, according to a press release from the Republic of Botswana. The 100 per cent privately-owned company is a joint venture with CEDA Venture Capital Fund.
The company aims to produce 200 000 condoms daily under a brand name Viva, using latex concentrate from Asia. Mike Proctor, managing director of LMP, said Southern African region consumes 1500 million condoms but less than 25 per cent are produced in the region.
Proctor said the new products will guard against incidents such as those in South Africa where 12.5 million condoms have had to be recalled over allegations of poor standard.
