Michelin, Conti, Dunlop come top in ADAC winter tyre test

Munich, Germany - ADAC, the influential German motorists' association has named winter tyres from Michelin, Continental and Dunlop as 'Especially recommended" in its annual test of winter tyres.

The motorists' group tested two groups of tyres. One was low- to mid-range performance 155/70 R 13 tyres in Q, S, T speed rating. The other was higher performance tyres (205/55 R 16) in H speed rating.

in the H-rated test, Michelin's Primacy Alpin PA 3 came top and Dunlop's SP Winter Sport 3D came second out of 16 tyres tested. Both were awarded the highest "Especially recommended" rating. A range of tyres in the mid-range won the 'recommended" rating, while three tyres were given the 'recommended with reservations' rating: Fulda Kristall Supremo, Firestone Winterhawk , and Avon Ice Touring ST.

Among the 18 lower speed rated tyres, Dunlop's SP Winter Response came out top, followed by Continental's WinterContact TS 800. Again, both tyres were named as 'Especially recommended'./p>

In this test, however, four tyres found themselves with the organisation's rating of doom, "not recommended": Kleber Krisalp 3; Pneumant PN 150 Wintec; Rigdon M+S 178 (retreaded) and the all-season Toyo Vario V2. The Goodyear Vector 5+ was notable as being the only all-season tyre to win the creditable "recommended" rating. it came sixth overall, ahead of Bridgestone's Blizzak LM 20 and Vredestein's Snowtrac.
