Purcell buys Goodyear's OTR retreading assets
ERJ staff report (TB)
Potosi, Missouri -- Purcell Tire & Rubber Co. has acquired the OTR tyre retreading assets of Goodyear's Wingfoot Commercial Tyre business unit and will consolidate the capacity of Wingfoot's two plants at its own OTR retreading plant in Potosi.
The deal involves OTR tyre retreading equipment at Wingfoot plants in Salisbury, North Carolina., and Winona, Minnesota, Goodyear said. Both plants will continue to make medium truck tyre retreads; about 35 jobs will be affected.
Terms of the deal, which closed on Friday, were not disclosed.
The deal combines the capacities of the two largest OTR tyre retreaders in the US. Purcell processed about 9 million pounds (4100 tonnes) of tread rubber in its OTR retreading operations last year, while Goodyear's consumption was about 8 million pounds (3600 tonnes).
The firms did not say how soon the equipment would be moved.
A Goodyear spokesman said the deal reflects the company's desire to make the best use of its assets. Purcell is a long-time Goodyear dealer.
