Stamford Tyres closes US office

Charlotte, North Carolina -- Singapore-based tyre distributor Stamford Tyres Corp. Ltd. has closed its US subsidiary in Charlotte, Stamford Tires & Wheels Inc., but continues to offer its brands to those interested in ordering container-loads.
Stamford opened an office and and 7400 m2 warehouse in Charlotte in 2006 after starting US operations in Medly, Florida, in 2005. The company did not explain its reasons for closing the US operation.
Stamford Tyres sells China-sourced Sumo Akina- and Cougar-brand tyres and SSW-brand alloy wheels in North America and is an international distributor of Dunlop, Continental, Toyo and Falken-brand tyres, concentrating mostly on the Far East, Middle East and Australia/New Zealand.
Stamford posted $287 million in sales in fiscal 2008, about three-quarters of which came form Southeast Asia. Sales for the first nine months of fiscal 2009 slipped 6.6 percent.
