Bekaert said Q1 sales were stable

Kortrijk, Belgium -- Bekaert issued a limited trading update, saying, "first quarter consolidated sales were stable in comparison with the first quarter of an exceptional 2008, with strong differences between regions."

The company said sales fell by 14.3 percent globally, driven by weak markets in EMEA and North America.

Bekaert did not break out its sales of steelcord activities.
